3D Cameras! A real breakthrough or an unnecessary achievement?

Fujifilm 3D Camera

Fujifilm 3D Camera

I have been lately seeing the hype of 3D Movies which have done a lot of business by adding the word 3D with the movie title :) Frankly speaking the difference is not worth the buzz created. I don’t like the fact that it needs additional equipment to view the movie, even if the movie is 3D you will see the same graphics on your computer as before unless you have 3D TV and 3D Spectacles. Even if you get all of it, do you think the price of 3D TV and Specs is worth the difference?

This wasn’t enough, camera makers like Fujifilm have gone a step ahead and created a 3D Point-&-Shoot camera that can capture 3D photos BUT what can you do with the 3D photos? To view it in best quality you again need the 3D TV but no specs (thanks God). But they have a little heart for poor people, if you cannot afford to buy 3D TV, you can view the photos on the LCD screen of the camera which they claim is capable of displaying 3D image. So, always keep a very large density memory card in the camera to keep your images with you whenever you want to see the beautiful 3D photos.

This doesn’t stop here, new mobile phones are also coming out with the 3D cameras :) Hope you have fun with that!

If I was an Engineer

May 11th, 2010

Since my childhood I had a thing for engineering and I always wanted to be an Engineer, but the faith had decided something else for me. Anyways, I am not going to blame my faith for this because I love what I am today, I was a deep art admirer too and had good drawing skills while I was in school but I never realized that time that I could be an artist but later time made me realize it :)

I still love engineering and always keen to read and know about new inventions that guys come up with. Let it be electronic engineering or mechanical. If I had become an engineer instead of a designer then this is what I had been working on:

1- A vehicle that can be used as car and can also be converted into a bike whenever needed. It will certainly help a lot in traffic jams and parking.

2- A mobile phone that doesn’t need charger; instead, movement can keep it charged, like in the old watches. I remember my mother used to wear a watch which didn’t had any cells/batteries in it, she always set the time and wear it, it automatically starts ticking using the movement of hand.

Very small job, can you rush?

September 30th, 2009

I just came across a humorous illustration on Freelanceswitch showing how funny a client’s request could be. I am sure, very often designers come across these kinds of requests.

Here is the illustration:

Interesting General Knowledge answers

June 15th, 2009

Last night I received a text message on the subject of “World Superb General Knowledge”. I found it very interesting and went ahead to find the authenticity whether its true or not. I was able to find only a few of them to be true, while other things were not authentic (or atleast I didn’t find any source of it)

Snakes can live as long as 22 months without eating anything

I knew that Snakes can live for months without eating anything but found it very intriguing that one of the breeds ie. Ball Python, is believed to live for more than 22 months without eating anything.

It rains the whole year in Singapore

Singapore has no distinctive seasons (wet or dry) because it rains all 12 months. The only difference is the humidity and temperature.

Falcon can fly at the top speed of 200mph

Falcons are the fastest flying birds in the world and Peregrine Falcon tops with the highest speed of 200mph which is 322kph.

Kidney cleans out 500 gallons of blood each day

Kidney plays a very important part in a human body and a normal person’s Kidney cleans out 400-500 gallons of blood every day. WOW! That’s a heck of a job!

These were the only ones which I found to be true. Below are some more which I have no idea whether its true or not. Here they are:
- In Japan they teach students to write with both hands
- Rabbit never closes its eyes
- You cannot see pure diamond in water. It disappears

I will pay if I like the design

May 13th, 2009

These days it’s been a dilemma for designers whether to proceed with this kind of requests or not but in my personal opinion, IT SHOULD NOT! This kind of requests are termed as SPEC Work, it is the work produced on speculative basis.

One of a fellow designer Jacob Cass has nicely articulated this in a real life example:

“I went for a dental check-up yesterday. After the dentist inspected my teeth, she suggested some work to prevent further tooth decay. I told her to go ahead, and if the dental work was satisfactory, I’d be more than happy to pay. She responded that she wouldn’t be able to do that, because she normally provides a service when a fee is agreed upon up-front. I said I’d let her know after I checked in with other local dentists.”

I think the above example clears the picture very much why clients shouldn’t come to the designer without paying him/her for the time he/she spends on their project. When a designer is assigned a job, he puts his time and efforts to it which should be compensated in return. It is always a good practice to decide the cost beforehand and get some initial payment (unless you have a very good trust on the client).

Holo-Disc takes over BluRay

May 11th, 2009

Recently GE launched a new technology of storage called Holo-Disc which beats the previous technology of BluRay. It can hold data up to 500GB unlike the BluRay with 50GB capacity. The Holo-Disc is named after the holographic surface of the disc.

As far as I can see that its a case of producing something just because you can, rather than because it is needed. Even the BluRay disc is not yet widely used because of expensive players as well as expensive media. The same goes for the Holo-Disc, it is currently only available in lab settings for testing purpose and it will take around 1-2 more years to hit the market. People are still preferring DVDs for high quality movies and large data storage for backup purpose.

Get ready for office in 5 minutes

May 6th, 2009

One of my friend recently shared a video which shows a man getting ready for the office which includes making breakfast, tea, washing teeths, and  changing cloths.  It was shown in a Japanese TV show.

If you get to learn these techniques then it will spare you plenty of time to sleep in the morning before waking up for the office :). Enjoy!

How to stop Blog-Spam?

April 28th, 2009

I usually don’t write too much posts but still my blog is flooded with spam messages/comments. I had to manually delete each spam comment every morning until I got the Wordpress plugin which does this job for me. Its Akismet Spam Blocking plugin. I just noticed that it has blocked over 12,900 spam messages since I installed it. As far as I remember, I installed it in the starting of 2008. So, its doing pretty good job for me.

Is your logo equipped enough to attract new prospect clients or customers?

March 17th, 2008

I am here to discuss the re-designing of a company’s exiting logo which was designed years back when the company started. I am here to talk about evolution of “LOGO DESIGN” with the new trends. First and foremost, the logo is a very important part of company’s identity (I am not going to dig into the logo design importance in this article; rather I want to focus on the idea of re-designing of a company’s old logo).

Imagine, a company started more than 4 decades ago with a mission to deliver packages from one place to another in a fancy box tied with strings around it and they showed the same idea in their logo design to clearly represent about what they do. You probably have gotten the idea about the company I am talking about. Yes, I am talking about UPS. Its old logo was designed by Paul Rand back in 1961. It was the time when they used strings to tie the box. But, now when the packaging style is totally changed, no strings are used to tie the package, and most of all UPS expanded its services. Now UPS doesn’t only deliver packages, but it deals in other global transportation services, business solutions to ship your product right at the customer’s doorstep, and other related services. Therefore, they needed a new logo which not only focuses on ONE idea but rather cater to wide range of services offered by the company and to appeal to mindset of the info-tech generation.

Other few examples can be Kodak, Lucent Technologies, AT&T, and AIWA.

A question arises how do you know when its time to re-design?

Its simple! You can evaluate yourself if your company logo needs a fresher look by checking the points below:

1- Does your logo stand well with the current trend?

2- Does your logo still show the company’s trait or extended services?

3- Does your logo really stand-out in when put among other competitors’ logo?

4- Does your logo make a good impression when used in electronic mediums (eg. TV commercial, website etc.)
